J. John Woo, M.D.

J. John Woo, M.D. is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship trained retina specialist and surgeon. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the retina, macula, and vitreous, and has been performing complex vitreo-retinal surgery since 2003. As a retina specialist, Dr. Woo has been active as an instructor, lecturer, researcher, and investigator in national FDA clinical trials in academic teaching institutions and in private practice.

Dr. Woo was born in Seoul, South Korea and spent his childhood years growing up in South America. At age 10 he and his family immigrated to the United States and attended local schools in Maryland.

Dr. Woo graduated from The Johns Hopkins University with Bachelor of Arts with Honors. He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine where he also completed an Internal Medicine Internship at Mercy Medical Center. This was followed by Ophthalmology Residency at St. Vincent's Hospital of New York in Manhattan and the New York Medical College. He then completed the Vitreo-Retinal Diseases and Surgery Fellowship at The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School.

After completion of his fellowship, Dr. Woo was invited back to New York where he was appointed Assistant Professor of New York Medical College, and Assistant Director of Residency of his former program, teaching residents and medical students on the Retina and Trauma Service. During his tenure for six years, he was also active in retina private practice in the Upper East Side, Greenwich Village, and Staten Island.

Dr. Woo moved to the Washington DC metropolitan area in 2009, and founded Advanced Retina Center, dedicated to providing the highest level of retinal diagnosis and treatment. He and his family reside in Northern Virginia. He enjoys tennis, jazz and classical music, traveling, and spending time with family.

Dr. Woo remains active in local and national organizations. Dr. Woo is former Treasurer and Secretary of the Medical Society of Northern Virginia, and has served on the Board of Directors. Professional affiliations include American Board of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Virginia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.
